Wisconsin
Wisconsin, a state so friendly that it's practically in Canada, has a friendly archives site as well..
The Wisconsin History site boasts more than 3 million records, easily searchable from the master search box.
The site, courtesy of the Wisconsin Historical Society, is divided in segments, including Family History and Community History, the latter with lots of maps, photos, newspapers and government records.
Be aware, though, that the searches are a mix of online items and pointers to offline materials or other databases.
You can browse individual collections of which there are quite a few, including:
Shipwreck Database (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and beyond)
1964 Freedom Summer Project (civil rights)
Oral Histories: Wisconsin Survivors of the Holocaust
Wisconsin in the Civil War
and of course, Wisconsin's favorite son...
Senator William Proxmire Collection
For state government documents, visit the Wisconsin Digital Archives for nifty items like
Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau agency reports.
